Help with local issues.

There are many challenges at a global and national level, but one way to get started and see the impact of your work is to act locally. Here are some of the pressing local issues you can engage with in Virginia and the New River Valley to make a difference.

  • Alternative Transportation

From connecting our bikeways into a valley-to-valley regional trail to vehicle sharing and restarting passenger rail to the NRV, there are many ways to reduce your transportation impacts and improve your life as you get from place to place.

  • Local Food Systems

You probably know about your local farmer’s market but do you know how it integrates with local food pantries through programs like Share the Spare and gleaning programs? Or how Community Supported Agriculture programs can benefit both you as a subscriber and the farmer you support?

  • Water Systems

Water: we drink it, bathe in it, paddle and swim in it, convey our waste with it, and so much more. We’re blessed with an abundance of water in our region, but we need to pay attention to how we take care of our natural and human-constructed infrastructure systems that affect it.

  • Environmental Damage

Some of the most urgent issues in our area have to do with current business and government activities that cause environmental impacts borne by local communities. The Mountain Valley Pipeline and the Radford Army Ammunition Plant are just two of the major “hot button” sources of environmental impacts in our area.
